The following steps are how we transform a rough-cut slab into a finished piece. We can complete the project for you or we can start the project and then allow you to finish on your own. Once you decide what portion(s) we will assist with, we can provide an estimated price.

STEP 1: SLAB LEVELING/PLANING

Kiln-dried lumber must be flattened on both sides to remove uneven surfaces and defects that formed while drying. After both sides are flat, the board can be further processed and squared. During this step, the thickness will be reduced between ¼”-¾”.

Pricing:
Narrow (less than 12”)

  1. Plane 2 sides (S2S) - $1.75/linear ft

  2. Plane 2 sides/joint 2 edges (S4S) $2.75/linear ft

Slab Leveling (12” to 56”)

  1. Bottom 80% flat & Top 100% flat

  2. $8/sq ft

STEP 2: STRAIGHT LINE/GLUE UP

If your finished project will be wider than a single board, we specialize in joining multiple boards from the same tree to reach the desired width. This method is generally more cost-effective than using one large slab and allows for more options to find the correct size and character for your project. When assembling two or more slabs, we use a large track saw to make perfectly straight and square rip cuts before gluing the joints. We can also glue up multi-plank panels from dimensional lumber using a similar process.

Pricing:

  • Medium (up to 30”x8’) - $8/sq ft

  • Large (larger either way) - $15/sq ft

STEP 3: WIDE BELT SAND

After leveling larger slabs or after gluing multiple boards, we make several passes through our 43” wide belt sander. On large slabs, marks left from slab leveling are removed which decreases the amount of finish hand sanding needed. For glued panels, the same process is used for evening out joints and creating a cohesive flat surface ready for finish hand sanding.

Pricing:

  • Bottom to 40 grit & Top to 100 grit - $8/sq ft

STEP 4: CRACK & KNOT EPOXY FILL

When using slabs from large trees, cracks, splits, wormholes, decay, etc. are often present. When finishing these high character pieces, these voids are filled with a clear epoxy resin to stabilize the lumber and accent the natural beauty while increasing the versatility of the board. As a general rule, we fill surfaces for desks, tables, countertops, etc. Accent pieces such as mantles, shelves, and décor we leave natural.

Pricing: $15/sq ft

STEP 5: HAND SANDING FOR FINISH

In this step, we make the final trim to exact size and do all of the hand sanding of the edges and faces up to 150 grit. If you want to take part in the build , this is a popular place to take over.

Pricing:

  • Medium (under 30” wide) - $15/sq ft

  • Large (over 30”) - $20/sq ft

  • X-Large (over 42” wide) - $25/sq ft

STEP 6: FINISH

The final step is applying a clear finish to ensure the natural beauty lasts for generations. Depending on the purpose of the piece, we have a variety of finishes to apply to the surface. We can also make recommendations for DIY finishing.

Pricing: $15/sq ft
